Last month Tailored had the opportunity to travel to Columbus, Ohio to visit an iconic American fashion brand that was founded over 120 years ago, Abercrombie & Fitch. When you think of A&F, you probably don’t think of them being a pre 1900’s company. Though after a short visit to their HQ, you get a full sense of the value A&F has brought to the fashion world over the last century. The purpose of our visit was to meet with some of the leaders from the apparel design team and continue discussions around what it might look like to introduce Tailored’s garment measuring software as a replacement to some of their hand measuring needs. In today’s world of web calls and text messages, it’s nice when you have the opportunity to meet people face to face. We had a wonderful meeting, met some great people and learned a lot along the way.
We’ve traveled to quite a few corporate HQ’s of major apparel retailers and they all have a similar feel. The buildings resemble a college campus, every person in sight is dressed very fashionable in the newest business casual garb, and there is company-history draped along every wall. Abercrombie & Fitch’s HQ did not disappoint, as a matter of fact, it was one of our favorite.
Their HQ is located just outside of Columbus in the town of New Albany. The massive campus is nestled deep in a heavily wooded area that you almost miss until you travel the mile long road to their main parking lot.
Upon our arrival, we felt right at home. We were given a tour of the garment design building and then were guided to the cafeteria, which resembled something out of a movie. A massive expanse with a giant stone fireplace at the far end with enough food and drink options to please every employee. Nature, architecture, fashion, fun, and history. All of us should be lucky enough to work at a place like A&F.
What We Learned
Fashion is very important to everyone. Not only the creative ones, but leadership as well. Like all retailers in today’s world, understanding the need to continuously advance the thought around what a great customer experience should be is a must. It was clear during our visit that A&F knows what they are, where they are going and what it’s going to take to get there. They understand it takes a balance of past, present and future thinking to maintain fashion dominance.
It was awesome to experience the inner workings of a company with such a long history, even if it was for only a few hours.
